Collagen Injections
• Back to Surgical Procedures main page >
Both collagen and fat injections are used to fill depressions or lines in the skin. Collagen is a normal component of all skin; however, the material used for an injection is prepared from cow cartilage. Since this collagen is a foreign protein, patients must be skin tested to check for allergies. When no allergies are detected, collagen can be injected into both the deeper and shallow layers of the skin in order to fill a depression or line. Depending on the area injected, patients experience a range of discomfort from essentially no pain to some mild discomfort during the injection process. If you have a low pain threshold, be sure to discuss ways to make the procedure more comfortable for you. Collagen injections are performed in your doctor's office, and you may choose to wear make up immediately after treatment and return to work without looking conspicuous. Since the body gradually breaks down the collagen, collagen injections provide only temporary improvement, typically maintaining a significant improvement for approximately six months.
