How do I start?

THE MOST IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION: Those considering genital surgery such as hymen repair should seek out a qualified plastic surgeon or gynecologist who performs the procedure. A qualified surgeon is a physician that is properly credentialed at a reputable hospital. Dr Apesos has gone through this vital credentialing process and is on the staff of several local hospitals as a plastic surgeon plus he is a full Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Wright State University School of Medical.

Make an appointment to have a consultation with us. On your first visit to my practice you will fill out questionnaires asking your medical history. Your personal medical history is of vital importance to my understanding of the type of care you will need as a patient.

In consultation your needs will be evaluated. Some of the questions may be very personal, but this is your chance to speak up about your concerns and condition. In other words just what is bothering you and what you expect to have completed. We will cover ground you probably seldom ever discuss with anyone else.

Specifically questions as to why you want the hymen repaired is very important. Are there religious reasons or a personal situation?

Where will the surgery be performed?

Hymen repairs are performed in our office facility and not a hospital primarily because of financial reasons. This procedure is generally thought of as cosmetic in nature because body functionality is not considered to be impaired; therefore such work is not covered through medical insurance plans.

The procedure seldom takes more than an hour and a half.

Will hymen repair be painful?

You will feel some discomfort, usually this is mild. Swelling occurs for the first few days. We will prescribe medication which reduces discomfort also applying cool compresses can be very helpful.

How fast will I recover?

Our best advice is to first and foremost follow our post operative instructions. The healing process can be reduced by adhering to the strict instructions you will be given. While you recover we insist there be no sexual penetration of the vagina until you are ready to destroy the hymen. Most patients return to work in 2-3 days, but avoid heavy lifting and any sports or dancing involving a lot of movement. Specifically you must not do any horse back riding, do not use bicycles stationary or on the road, and no riding on motorcycles.

Tell me the Risks and Limitations of Hymen Repairs?

Specifically, risks for hymen repair may include a repair failure. No guarantees are given as to acceptability of the results. All forms of surgery carry some degree of risks and complications, including scarring, wound separation, and infection. Be aware that most patients report no such issues. Discuss risks with us prior to surgery. You want to know, so ask.
